Abstract
Shirin is one of the best-known women of the Sasanian period who was mentioned in different historiographical traditions and later became the central figure of one of the best-known love stories in Persian literature. In Shirin: Christian Queen, Myth of Love, Wilhelm Baum seeks to trace the historical origins of Shirin and examine the connection between her historical position and her representation in Persian literature. The book addresses an interdisciplinary subject relevant to Iranian history, Persian literature, and women’s studies and is therefore worthy of critical examination. This article evaluates the methodology, structure, and content of the book and examines its claims in light of primary sources and recent scholarship. The results show that, although Baum attempts to bring historical and literary materials together and draws on a wide range of sources, the book has several shortcomings, including weaknesses in referencing, limited attention to previous scholarship, structural inconsistencies, and, in some cases, inaccuracies in the citation and interpretation of historical sources. Some of the analyses, particularly those concerning Iranian history, Zoroastrianism, the history of Christianity, and Persian literature, also lack sufficient documentary support or do not correspond with the findings of established scholarship in these fields. Overall, the book does not provide a sufficiently coherent and accurate account of the historical Shirin and the development of her representation in Persian literature and does not fully achieve the objectives it sets out to pursue.
