This study aims to develop a methodological framework for the study of Islamic inscriptions. Beyond their artistic and decorative value, inscriptions constitute important documentary sources for understanding the history, culture, art, religion, and social structures of Islamic societies. However, epigraphic studies in Iran have largely focused on textual reading or historical interpretation, with limited attention to a comprehensive framework for their systematic documentation and analysis. This research proposes an integrated model for the classification, documentation, and analysis of inscriptions through an interdisciplinary approach.
The study adopts a historical–analytical method based on library research, the examination of authoritative sources, and field observations. Data were collected according to the principles of cultural heritage documentation and analyzed within a systematic methodological framework.
The findings indicate that classifying inscriptions according to their location and function, together with the systematic examination of features such as language, script, material, dimensions, color and decoration, content, installation location, patron and human agents, date and signature, and conservation status, provides a comprehensive framework for identifying, documenting, and analyzing Islamic inscriptions. By integrating historical, artistic, technical, and conservation perspectives, the proposed framework facilitates comparative studies, standardizes documentation practices, and improves epigraphic analysis.
The study concludes that applying this framework can enhance the consistency and accuracy of epigraphic research while providing a practical basis for university education, specialized research, and documentation, conservation, and restoration projects concerning Islamic inscriptions.
