Historically, punctuation marks had limited usage in Persian script; however, they have now become an essential component of Persian writing. Over time, particularly after exposure to Western influences, many of these marks were incorporated into Persian orthography. Nonetheless, the lack of clear, standardized rules that are specifically tailored to the structure of Persian script, combined with individual discretion and certain typesetting limitations, has resulted in significant inconsistencies in their application. These inconsistencies have permeated educational textbooks, where notable divergences exist in the classification and functional description of punctuation marks. There is even disagreement regarding the historical existence of these marks in Persian script. Furthermore, these textbooks exhibit considerable shortcomings and, given advancements in technology, are generally in need of revision. Some marks have become obsolete in contemporary writing and should be discarded, while others may require inclusion in the list of essential punctuation marks. Most sources also fail to provide precise and comprehensive guidelines regarding spacing and the placement of punctuation marks. Given the wide array of available materials, this study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, focusing exclusively on the most widely circulated textbooks. Clearly, when core instructional texts display such inconsistencies and at times even contradict their own established rules, the accurate and comprehensive teaching of punctuation becomes an increasingly difficult endeavor. The paper concludes by recommending that the Academy of Persian Language and Literature, as the official authority on Persian language and script policy, should take a more active role in standardizing and systematizing punctuation rules.
